In Rainbow Kingdom, Ava loved mornings best. She skipped through the rainbow meadow, saying hello to buttercups, clouds and sleepy unicorns. Her favourite patch was purple—plummy, twinkly, perfectly purple.

At home in a round cloud cottage, Ava shared her berry toast with Rabbit. Rabbit nibbled politely. Ava giggled. “A little for you, a little for me,” she sang. “Sharing makes room for glee!”

Then—whoosh! The rainbow outside blinked, fizzed, and vanished. Every meadow turned silvery-grey. Even the cloud bridges looked like plain old porridge.

A small purple feather floated down: plink! It belonged to Owl, the wise keeper of colours. “The Rainbow Bell has gone quiet,” hooted Owl. “Will you help us find its colour-song, Ava?”

“Of course,” said Ava kindly. She packed two apple slices, three biscuits and one purple ribbon. Rabbit packed a carrot, which was very sensible, though rather crunchy. Off they went: step, skip, share!

At the first cloud bridge, a family of tiny raindrops sniffled. They had no blue to splash in their puddles. Ava found a blue bead beneath a stone—and shared it between them all.

The bead chimed, “Plink-plonk-blue!” A blue stream curled across the sky. But ahead, the Golden Orchard was dull. Its apples would not shine, and the unicorns were too gloomy to prance.

“Perhaps they need sunshine shared,” said Owl. Ava spotted a sunbeam caught in a spider’s silken web. Carefully, carefully, she freed it without tearing a single thread.

Ava gave the sunbeam to the smallest unicorn first. The unicorn glowed gold, then shared the glow with every tree. Pop! Pop! Pop! Golden apples sparkled all over the orchard.

Beyond the orchard lay Whispering Woods. The leaves had forgotten green. They rustled, “Mine, mine, mine,” and clutched every last green speck away from one another.

Ava placed her apple slices on a stump. “One for you, one for you, one for you,” she said. Rabbit shared carrot crumbs. Soon the leaves copied them, passing green from branch to branch.

Green rushed through the woods—swish, swash, SHIMMER! At the hilltop stood the Rainbow Bell. It was enormous, quiet and colourless. Beneath it waited all the kingdom, hoping.

Owl whispered, “The bell needs every colour together.” Ava held out blue, gold and green. “Not mine,” she said. “Ours.” Everyone added what they had: red berries, orange poppies, purple starlight.

Ava rang the bell with her purple ribbon. BONG! Colour streamed over cloud bridges, meadows and rooftops. The rainbow returned, brighter because everybody had helped make it.

That evening, Ava was home with Rabbit and two pieces of berry toast. “A little for you, a little for me,” she sang. Outside, the rainbow winked. Even toast seemed to taste more colourful.
